Hike Medical builds AI-powered custom 3D-printed insoles, using proprietary deep learning to convert 2D foot videos into accurate 3D foot models. The clinical product is the visible half of the business, but orthotics care requires a mountain of medical paperwork, prescriptions, signatures, insurance authorizations, and cross-provider fax flows, before a patient ever gets their device.

Behind the scenes, Hike runs Step Zero, a care qualification platform that automates that paperwork pipeline end to end.

Step Zero processes medical documents through a long chain of OCR, fact extraction, and multi-stage compliance checks. Hike needed to harden that pipeline, ship new clinician-facing tooling, and productionize the experience in time for a major enterprise customer demo, all on a tight timeline with a small internal engineering team.

Medical document pipeline

Improvements to the OCR and multi-stage processing flows that extract structured facts from faxes and clinical paperwork before they hit Step Zero's compliance checks.

Fax template refactor

Moved legal and compliance fax templates out of the database and into a version-controlled GitHub workflow, unlocking reviewability and safer rollouts for a critical part of the care qualification flow.

Clinician case lookup

Built a user-facing page that lets clinic phone staff pull up a patient's case in real time and report where they are in the care qualification process.

BYLD embedded a senior engineer into Hike's team for a six-week push on Step Zero. We improved the AI document processing pipeline, shipped a clinician-facing case lookup page so phone staff can tell patients exactly where they are in the qualification flow, and refactored the fax template system away from a database store into a version-controlled GitHub source of truth.

Alongside the feature work, we helped productionize the demo path for a major orthotics network customer, contributed to end-to-end testing practices on the Step Zero admin app, and supported Hike's SOC2 compliance work.
